UN Secretary General Urges Respect Indigenous People World

NEW YORK-Zone of Peace: All governments around the world must honor agreements with indigenous groups in making decisions in all areas, said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday (08/09/2013).
"Such consensus setting allows a better understanding of the values and their views and it is important to protect and promote the rights and political vision and establish the necessary framework for different cultures to live in harmony," Ban said, while commemorating the International Day of Indigenous People world.
There are more than 5,000 different indigenous groups in some 90 countries, or more than five percent of the world's population, according to United Nations statistics. Ban said the participation of indigenous peoples in decision-making must be ensured at all levels.
"Indigenous peoples have explained that they want development that takes into account the culture and identity and the right to set their own priorities," Ban said, as quoted by Xinhua on Saturday (10/8). He added that the post-2015 development agenda must work together with the rights, perspectives and needs of indigenous peoples.
International Day of World's Indigenous People has been celebrated since 1995, and this year's theme is "Honoring treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements".

Most indigenous people have visited the UN Headquarters in New York, USA, to commemorate the day. Most Native American People rode horses for four days to go to New York. "I urge all member states to undertake concrete steps to address the challenges faced by indigenous peoples, especially the non-involvement and their isolation, by honoring all commitments and examine what can be done," said Ban.
